His Heart

August 13, 2010

She unites herself with her Lord,

and He gathers unto Himself

her strength and her weakness,

her energy and her weariness.

She has only to look

and He is there with her,

gathering her new day of motherhood

into His Heart.

One thing a Catholic mother may desire is to start the day with the celebration of the Eucharist. It is not always possible! Distance, household responsibilities, and family needs often intrude — to say nothing of the shortage of priests and opportunities for Mass.

But we have a prayer, the Morning Offering, in which we unite our “prayers, works, joys, and sufferings” with the Mass which is celebrated all over the world, and which is one, because it is the single offering of Jesus.

It is not necessary to say any long formula, or even any short one. A look is enough. It is a personal moment, a moment of love, of invitation, because Jesus is, you might say, “a gentleman” and does not force his presence into our lives. We invite him with something as small as a glance, and his great Heart takes everything in.
